Avoid moisture — do not wipe with wet cloth or expose to rain. Papier-mâché weakens when wet.
Avoid direct sunlight — prolonged UV exposure fades the hand-painted pigments and dulls the lacquer.
Dust with a dry soft cloth — never use chemical cleaners or abrasives on the lacquer surface.
This vase is built in layers over a clay mould, each ring of pulp left to dry before the next is added, then sanded smooth by hand. The chinar leaves are drawn freehand across the curved surface — a far harder canvas than a flat lid — and finished in real gold leaf, laid line by line and burnished with a polished stone.
Ghulam Mohammad learned the chinar motif from his father, who in turn learned it from his. No two leaves on this vase are identical; the small asymmetries are the mark of a hand, not a machine.

The chinar — the oriental plane — has shaded the Valley's gardens for five centuries. Its five-pointed leaf is to Kashmir what the maple is to the world's flags.
Naqash painters have rendered the chinar in lacquer since the Mughal courts. To paint it well is considered the truest test of a master's hand.
Where the leaf falls each autumn, the painted one endures. Chinar pieces are traditionally given to mark a beginning — a marriage, a birth, a home.
